BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – In search of its first conference title since 2010, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team fell to SUNY Geneseo 5-0 in the 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship match on Sunday at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
The contest marked the ninth-straight year that these two programs met for the title match. New Paltz finished the fall season with a 9-3 overall record while the Knights improved to 10-0 overall and captured the team's fourth-straight league title.
Geneseo earned the automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament which will be held from May 8-20 with the quarterfinals through the finals being held in Mason, Ohio hosted by Ohio Northern University.
In doubles action, senior co-captains
Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and
Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) fell to juniors Marylen Santos and Mai Hashimoto 8-3 at flight one.
In a closely played flight two match, sophomore
Veronika Paikin (North Woodmere, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) and freshman
Sara O'Brien (Orangeburg, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) fell 8-6 at the hands of senior Amanda Rosati and junior Cat Crummey. At flight three, the freshman duo of
Brittany Grandville (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and
Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) fell 8-4 to senior Dexuan Yuan and sophomore Maggie Hale.
The Knights captured the two completed singles matches to take home the title. At flight two, Grandville fell to Crummey 6-0, 6-2. In the flight four match, Schmidt dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Yuan.
