Box Score BUFFALO - The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer squad fell 2-1 at Buffalo State in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday afternoon.
Despite the defeat, the Hawks are still alive for postseason play with an 8-7-2, 2-4-2 SUNYAC mark and play at SUNY Fredonia tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Bengals improve to 7-7-2, 4-4-0 SUNYAC and host SUNY Oneonta tomorrow at 1 p.m. For New Paltz to make the postseason, the Hawks must defeat Fredonia on Saturday, have Plattsburgh and Brockport draw and have Oswego lose to Cortland.
The match was scoreless well into the second half when Buffalo State notched a pair of goals in a three-minute span to put the Hawks in a 2-0 deficit. Tianna Hatch scored in the 71
st minute and Breanna Knight scored on a 15-yard free kick in the 73
rd minute for the Bengals.
But New Paltz would not go down without a fight as senior midfielder
Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) drew a foul inside the box and proceeded to convert the ensuing penalty kick in the 77
th minute to get the Hawks within one, 2-1. For Anselmi, the score gives her a team-leading six goals, three of which are penalty kicks. The senior now ranks eighth in program history with 36 career points.
Anselmi nearly knotted the game at 2-2 in the 86th minute but was denied by Buffalo State's keeper, Nicole Torres.
Freshman goalkeeper
Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) made five saves while facing 18 shots from the Bengals. Her counterpart Torres also recorded five saves for Buffalo State.
The Hawks were outshot 18-10 during the match as junior midfielder
Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) led the offense with five shots. Anselmi chipped in with three, all on target. Senior midfielder
Sarah Painter (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and sophomore forward
Kaite Mulry (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) both registered a shot on goal each.
