Women’s Soccer Defeated 2-1 at Fredonia, Eliminated from Postseason Contention

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team fell at SUNY Fredonia 2-1 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the loss, the Hawks were officially eliminated from postseason contention and finish the year 8-8-2, 2-4-2. Fredonia, meanwhile, improves to 8-7-1, 5-3-1 and earned the No. 3 seed in the SUNYAC tournament.
 
The Hawks conceded a goal to Fredonia in the 16th minute and fell behind 1-0 as Katie Kleine scored her seventh goal of the year thanks to an assist from younger sister, Kristie Kleine.
 
But New Paltz answered right back with the equalizer in the 23rd minute as sophomore defender Sloane Lipshie (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) notched her second goal of the year from an assist by senior midfielder Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland).
 
The match was tied for the remainder of the opening half and well into the second stanza when Fredonia's Alexis Moreland fired in her sixth marker of the season in the 64th minute to put New Paltz in a 2-1 deficit.
 
The Hawks only managed one shot the rest of the match as senior defender Bryce Kristall (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) fired a shot high of the cage in the 72nd minute.
 
Anselmi led the squad with four shots and finishes her career with 37 points, eight-most in program history. Lipshie chipped in with three shots while Kristall, senior Sarah Painter (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and freshman forward Gabriela Cabello (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) all registered two shots. For the match, New Paltz outshot Fredonia 17-15.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) finished with six saves, bringing her total to 86 saves in 2014. Along with Painter, Anselmi and Kristall, senior defender Christine Lacaria (Watertown, CT/Holy Cross) also played her final game for the Hawks.
