Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team battled The College at Brockport to a 2-2 double-overtime draw in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on a rain-soaked Saturday at the New Turf Field.
The Hawks move to 6-5-2, 0-2-2 SUNYAC and will host SUNY Plattsburgh on Friday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, move to 6-3-1, 1-2-1 SUNYAC and host Utica College on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m.
Leading the New Paltz attack were senior defender
Bryce Kristall (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) and senior midfielder and team captain
Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland), who both tallied goals and a team-high five shots apiece for the Hawks. Freshman goalkeeper
Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) recorded eight saves on the afternoon, facing a total of 18 as the Hawks fired off 21 shots and held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hawks scored the opening goal in the 24
th minute as Kristall headed in a corner from junior midfielder
Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) for her first goal of the year and second of her career to give New Paltz a 1-0 lead. But the Golden Eagles netted the equalizer in the 40
th minute as the match headed to intermission knotted at 1-1.
In the second half of play, Anselmi scored her third goal of the year and 11
th of her career on a break away, one-on-one with the Brockport keeper, firing a shot in the left side to hand the Hawks a 2-1 edge with less than ten minutes in regulation. But the lead was short lived as Brockport responded with the tying goal in the 86
th minute.
New Paltz nearly won the match in the waning seconds of regulation with a flurry of shots, including a header by senior midfielder
Sarah Painter (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and a shot by Anselmi that sailed just high of the cage.
The teams then headed to extra time where the Hawks would outshoot the Golden Eagles 3-1 but could not find the back of the net. New Paltz then won the tie-breaking penalty kick shootout, 4-2, as Gandolfo, Kristall, Anselmi and sophomore midfielder
Skye Kaler (Charlton, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) all converted and Cordero came up with a crucial save.
