Box Score DANBURY, Conn. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team fell 3-2 in double overtime at Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday evening.
The Hawks, 3-8-1, will look to regroup this weekend in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Oct. 10-11, playing at SUNY Plattsburgh on Friday at 4 p.m. The Colonials move to 5-6-1 and play at the University of Massachusetts-Boston on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
New Paltz jumped out to a quick lead when senior back
Stephen Browne (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) netted a goal in the 11
th minute to hand the Hawks an early 1-0 advantage. The goal was Browne's first of the year and sixth of his career. The match remained 1-0 in favor of New Paltz until the 39
th minute when the Colonials netted the equalizer on a penalty kick goal by sophomore Vigan Pacuku.
The first half scoring concluded right before halftime when junior midfielder
Joe Hughes (Westbury, N.Y./Carle Place) connected on a goal in the 44
th minute, thanks to an assist by senior co-captain
Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa), to hand New Paltz a 2-1 lead going into intermission. For Hughes, it was his first tally of the year and second of his career. The Hawks outshot the Colonials 17-5 in the opening half.
Western Connecticut tied the match at 2-2 in the 52
nd minute when sophomore Cole Hyla notched his sixth goal of the season. The contest remained scoreless the remainder of the half and would head into overtime.
The Colonials scored with 5:27 left in double overtime after WestConn drew a foul just outside the 18. On the ensuing set piece, Hyla curled the ball into the box and found the head of Pacuku which was rifled into the back of the net to hand the Hawks the tough extra-time defeat.
Senior goalkeeper
Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) was charged with the loss and recorded five saves in his 104:32 of action. Freshman Austin Tierney made 14 saves for Western Connecticut.
The Hawks outshot WestConn 30-21 in a match that had 31 fouls called and five yellow cards issued. Freshman forward
Aleco Podias (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) led the attack with six shots while junior defender
Kevin Jacobsen (Guilford, CT/Guilford) chipped in with five. Browne and senior co-captain
Brian Spina (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) fired off four shots each.
