NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The No. 2 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team will head to Cambridge, Mass., for the first of two United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossovers this weekend at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. On Saturday, Feb. 8, New Paltz will face D'Youville College at 1 p.m. and then No. 7 Elmira College at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 9, the Hawks will go up against rival and sixth-ranked Nazareth College at noon.
RECORDS: New Paltz heads into this weekend's competition with a 7-1, 1-0 UVC record… D'Youville holds a record of 2-3, 0-1… Elmira owns a mark of 6-2, 1-0, while Nazareth is 2-2, 1-0.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS (7-1, 1-0 UVC): New Paltz fell to No. 4 Springfield College 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 29-27, 25-23) in a tightly-contest home opener Thursday, Feb. 6… The Hawks put up a fight as every player in the starting lineup had at least seven kills, but the balanced attack wasn't able to hold off the Pride… Sophomore middle blocker
Christopher Husmann led the team with 11 kills, while sophomore outside hitter
Tim Ferriter added 10 kills… Sophomore setter
Christian Smith and junior setter
John Lutjen contributed 28 and 17 assists, respectively… Husmann and freshman middle blocker
C.J. Borfitz teamed up for three total blocks each… Lutjen came up with a match-high-tying seven digs.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: Ferriter leads the team and is fifth in the UVC in kills per set (3.68)… Two Hawks are ranked among the UVC top 10 in hitting percentage: freshman middle blocker
Steven Woessner is ranked third (.425) and Ferriter ranks eighth (.382)…
Christian Smith ranks eighth in the conference and paces the team in assists per set (7.75), while junior outside hitter
Gus Gregory leads the team and is fourth in the conference in service aces per set (0.67).
TEAM STATISTICS: New Paltz ranks first in the UVC in three categories: kills per set (13.07), hitting percentage (.309) and assists per set (12.14)… The Hawks have been strong on defense, too, ranking seventh in the conference, averaging 8.96 digs per set… New Paltz ranks fourth in the UVC in service aces, averaging 1.61 per set.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS (2-3, 0-1 UVC): D'Youville has lost three straight matches, the most recent to Nazareth on Jan. 29… The Golden Flyers prevailed by a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, and 25-18) final… Sophomore outside hitter Brett Cawthorn led the D'Youville offense with eight kills.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: Cawthorn leads the Spartans in kills per set (2.19) and hitting percentage (.160)… Junior libero Alex Johnson leads the team in digs per set with 2.33, while junior outside hitter Steve Goedtel is the team leader in assists with 3.19 per set.
TEAM STATISTICS: D'Youville ranks 10th in the conference in hitting percentage (.143) and fifth in service aces with 1.56 per set… The Spartans average 1.44 blocks per set and are fifth in the conference in service aces with 1.56 per set… The team averages 6.25 digs per set and 6.75 assists per set.

SCOUTING THE SOARING EAGLES (6-2, 1-0 UVC): Elmira snagged another top-10 win, as the Soaring Eagles defeated No. 7 Carthage, 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-22), on Feb. 2… Sophomore outside hitter Erik Griffin finished with a match-high 11 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Mike Ellison and senior middle hitter Ryan Nerney had nine kills and five kills, respectively… Senior setter Michael Vellutato dished out 30 assists and added three kills of his own… Junior libero Rob Shade tied the team-high with seven digs.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: Griffin leads the team and is ranked second in the UVC in kills per set with 4.04… Vellutato ranks second in the conference in assists with 10.13 per set, and Shade is the team leader and ranked fourth in the UVC with 2.87 digs per set.
TEAM STATISTICS: The Soaring Eagles rank third in the conference in digs per set, averaging 9.53… Elmira is fourth in the UVC in kills with 12.06 per set and fifth in hitting percentage (.236)… The team averages 11.22 assists per set and ranks fifth in the conference.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN FLYERS (2-2, 1-0 UVC): Nazareth was swept by fifth-ranked UC Santa Cruz, 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-18), on Feb. 2… Junior middle blocker Luke Lawatsch finished with six kills and two solo blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Tim Zyburt also added six kills… Sophomore middle blocker Chris Mahan and sophomore outside hitter Grant Levermore tallied five kills and four kills, respectively, and sophomore setter Nick McDonagh contributed 20 assists.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: Lawatsch has the highest hitting percentage in the UVC (.464)… Zyburt ranks seventh in the conference with 3.27 kills per set, while McDonagh ranks third in the UVC in assists per set with 9.85… Lawatsch is also second in the conference with 1.36 blocks per set.
TEAM STATISTICS: Nazareth ranks in the top five of the UVC in three different categories: assists per set (11.27), kills per set (11.73) and blocks per set (2.57)… The Golden Flyers rank seventh in hitting percentage (.213) and eighth in digs per set, averaging 8.93.
