Women’s Tennis Blanks Union (N.Y.), 9-0

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team handed Union (N.Y.) College a 9-0 setback on Sunday afternoon in its first match following its March Spring Break trip.
 
New Paltz rises to 9-6 overall and visits the Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, April 9, for a 3:30 p.m. match. Union drops to 5-3 overall and next hosts the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 12, at 12 p.m.
 
New Paltz cruised through doubles play, winning by scores of 8-3, 8-4 and 8-5 at flights one, two and three, respectively. The Hawks' No. 1 doubles tandem of junior Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and freshman Veronika Paikin (North Woodmere, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) put up the largest margin of victory in the match in doubles action, winning, 8-3, over Union's pairing.
 
Union nearly foiled the Hawks' shutout bid at flight five of singles, but freshman Elizabeth Palmer (Woodstock, N.Y./Cazenovia) won, 11-9, in a tiebreak to clinch the sweep. Notably, sophomore Allie Starke (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) won, 6-0, 6-0, at flight six.
