Women’s Soccer Drops Close Match, 2-1, at No. 12 Union (N.Y.)

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team played tough right until the final whistle but dropped a close match at No. 12 Union (N.Y.) on Tuesday night, falling to the Dutchwomen 2-1.

The Hawks drop to 6-2 on the year and will look to recover at Wheaton (Mass.) College on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. Union, meanwhile, improves to 6-0, and hosts The College at Brockport on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Union did not waste any time getting into the scoring column as the Dutchwomen scored in only the eighth minute of action to put the Hawks in an early 1-0 deficit.

But New Paltz would respond as senior midfielder Sarah Painter (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) scored her second goal of the season in the 26th minute off an assist from sophomore forward Kaite Mulry (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). Painter's shot was a low liner in the box from about ten yards out, finding the back of the net for the equalizer.

The match remained knotted at 1-1 well into the second half of play before Union broke the deadlock with a left side chip shot from about 15 yards out to put New Paltz down 2-1 in the 75th minute.

The Hawks fired off five shots after the go-ahead goal by Union, including a pair of blocked shots by freshman forward Julia Friedman (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) and senior defender Bryce Krystall (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) in the 89th minute, but could not score the tying goal in the waning seconds.

Junior midfielder Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) led the Hawk attack with six shots, four being on target. Sophomore midfielder Skye Kaler (Charlton, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and senior midfielder Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) both fired off three shots apiece.

Union held a slight edge in shots, 22-19 while New Paltz attempted seven corners compared to six for the Dutchwomen.

Freshman goalkeeper Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) was charged with the loss despite making a season-high eight saves.
