Men’s Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision at Union (N.Y.)

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team fell, 2-0, at Union (N.Y.) College on Wednesday evening in non-conference action at College Park.
 
The Hawks fall to 3-4 on the year and will look to regroup during the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opening weekend, playing host to SUNY Cortland on Friday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m. and SUNY Oswego on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. Union, meanwhile, improves to 4-3-1 and plays at Liberty League opponent Bard College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
The Dutchmen tallied a goal in the 20th minute, as junior forward Carl Faber tallied his third goal of the year on a header off a free kick by sophomore midfielder Andrew Fontaine to put the Hawks in a 1-0 deficit. New Paltz fired three shots in the next six minutes but were unable to beat Union's keeper, senior Ryan Carter.
 
The match remained 1-0 in favor of Union for the remainder of the opening period and into the second half. But the Dutchmen scored another marker, this time in the 52nd minute, to put New Paltz in a 2-0 hole as junior forward Nicholas Hall-Risko fired in his third goal of the year.
 
Following the second tally, the Hawks increased their offensive pressure including consecutive shots by junior defenders Kevin Jacobsen (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and Angelo DiMatteo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) in the 69th minute, but again were unable to capitalize.
 
The Hawks fired off 10 shots in the match – five on target – but could not find the back of the net. Nine different players recorded a shot for New Paltz, with senior midfielder Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) accounting for two.
 
Senior netminder Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) was charged with the loss and made a season-high four saves on 15 shots faced.
