Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team played visiting SUNY Oswego to a 1-1 double overtime draw in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday after on the New Turf Field.
The Hawks are sitting at 3-5-1, 0-1-1 SUNYAC and will look for their first conference win of the season at SUNY Geneseo on Friday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. The Lakers, 1-6-2, 0-1-1 SUNYAC, host SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Oct. 3, also in search of their first league victory.
Both goals in the match occurred via penalty kick, as junior forward
Jason Gonzalez (Woodside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) connected in the 25th minute for his fourth marker of the year and his second penalty kick goal.
The 1-0 lead for the Hawks lasted for the remainder of the first half and well into the second half before Oswego knotted the match at 1-1 on a penalty kick of its own, by Tom Bartyzel, in the 64th minute.
For the match, the Lakers edged out the Hawks in shots, 18-17. Oswego outshot New Paltz, 6-4, in the overtime periods.
Three players registered three shots for the Hawks with senior midfielder and co-captain
Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa), Gonzalez and junior midfielder
Dondre Irving (Elmont, N.Y./Valley Stream North) leading the attack. Irving had two shots during the match bounce off the crossbar, including a header in the 100th minute that nearly won the game for New Paltz.
Senior goalkeeper
Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) played the entire match and recorded four saves with two occurring in the overtime periods.
The Hawks had five shots in the first half, including a shot off the post by freshman forward
Gino Scardino (West Hempstead, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) in the 22nd minute. But after the opening stanza, Oswego found its attack and outshot New Paltz 15-12 the remainder of the game.
Due to the conference's tie-breaking procedures, the teams headed to a shootout after the double overtime ended in which the Hawks won, 4-2. The first four shooters for New Paltz scored, and Domino came up clutch with two saves against the Lakers in the tie-breaking session.
