Box Score

NEW YORK, N.Y.- Senior forward Jason Gonzalez (Woodside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) notched a pair of goals to lift the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Hunter College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hawks improve to 10-5 overall and will pay a visit to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and Catskill Cup rival SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1 p.m. Hunter drops to 5-8 and moves on to host Baruch College on Saturday Oct. 17, at 12 p.m.

The contest marks the 300th career win for fifth-year head coach Gene Ventriglia. Prior to his time with the Hawks, Ventriglia spent 24 years as the heach coach of the women's soccer program at Army, elevating the team from a club status to a varsity level sport and one of the most competitive programs in the Patriot League.

Ventriglia also built a name for himself as head coach of the New Paltz High School, Goshen High School, and Highland High School men's soccer programs, capturing five league and division titles and a pair of sectional and district championships. Ventriglia is a 1967 graduate of New Paltz and a New Paltz Athletics Hall of Famer.

Hunter was quick to land on the board early in the first half for a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. The Hawks were quick to catch up as Gonzalez netted New Paltz's first goal in the 59th minute on a pass from junior midfielder Sam Spring (Long Island City, N.Y./NYC Lab School for Collaborative Studies).

The score remained locked at 1-1 until the 83rd minute when Gonzalez was awarded a penalty kick that found the back of the net and sealed the 2-1 victory for the Hawks.

New Paltz outshot Hunter, 13-4, and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Offensively, Gonzalez registered five shots with four on goal. Junior Tucker Stern (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) added three shots to the Hawks' efforts while Spring recorded two shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper John Guzzo (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) made three saves between the posts and played the full 90 minutes.
