Box Score FREDONIA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team closed out their regular season with a 5-4 double-overtime loss to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe SUNY Fredonia on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore foward
Aleco Podias (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) notched three of the four New Paltz goals.
The Hawks conclude the 2015 season with a 10-8-1 overall record and a 3-6 SUNYAC record. Fredonia improves to 3-11-3, 2-5-2 SUNYAC and rounds out its regular season against Hobart College on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m.
Podias was quick to snatch a 1-0 lead for New Paltz in the 11th minute of the first half, but the Blue Devils rallied to tie up the score just minutes later.
Fredonia surged ahead, 2-0, on a goal from junior forward Joey Vucic in the 24th minute before the Hawks evened out the score as Podias racked up his second goal of the day on an assist from junior defender
Brendan Egan (East Northport, N.Y./Northport). Podias and junior midfielder Mazin Mohamed added one goal each for their team within less than a minute of each other for a 3-3 score at the half.
Senior forward
Jason Gonzalez (Woodside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) opened the second half with a goal for New Paltz, pushing the Hawks to a 4-3 advantage. The Hawks held on to their lead for most of the second half, but in the 81st minute, junior forward Parker Healy found the back of the net to bring the score to 4-4. New Paltz attempted to slip in one final goal in regulation but couldn't cash in, forcing the game into overtime.
After a fruitless first overtime period for both teams, Healy delievered the game-winning goal in the 108th minute, sealing the final 5-4 victory for the Blue Devils.
New Paltz outshot Fredonia, 24-18, but the Blue Devils edged the Hawks, 6-5, in corner kicks. Healy led the Fredonia offense with four shots.
Junior midfielder
Sam Spring (Long Island City, N.Y./NYC Lab School for Collaborative Studies) led the New Paltz offense with seven shots. Gonzalez tallied five shots of his own while Podias added four to the Hawks' efforts.
Sophomore goalkeeper
John Guzzo (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) made five stops in goal for the Hawks. Freshman goalkeepers Noah Voss and Jeremy Bari tallied five saves together for Fredonia.
