Men's Soccer Drops 5-1 Decision to No. 20 Plattsburgh

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team fought through the pouring rain but came up short as the Hawks fell, 5-1, to No. 20 SUNY Plattsburgh in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match up on Friday afternoon.

The Hawks drop to 8-5-0, 2-3-0 SUNYAC and return to action tomorrow afternoon when they face SUNY Potsdam in the inaugural Heinz Ahlmeyer game at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field. Plattsburgh improves to 10-1-2, 2-0-2 SUNYAC and continues its weekend road games against SUNY Oneonta tomorrow at 1 p.m.

The Cardinals were quick to take the lead as junior forward Alexis Archilla rushed past the New Paltz defense in the seventh minute of game play to find the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage. Archilla extended Plattsburgh's lead, 2-0, in the 16th minute as his shot rolled slowly into the net before it could be stopped.

New Paltz managed to get on the board in the 37th minute as junior midfielder Charlie Versen (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./The Masters School) launched a free kick that found freshman defender Sebastain Gordon-Somers-Archer (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Kew-Forest School) in the box. Gordon-Somers-Archer executed a bicycle kick into the net, slicing the score to 2-1.

As the rain picked up in the second half, New Paltz pushed to find the equalizer but the Cardinals wouldn't be stopped as Archilla notched a hatrick within several minutes to seal the 5-1 win for Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh outshot the Hawks, 16-12, and held a 8-6 advantage in corner kicks. Archilla recorded nine shots with six shots on goal for the Cardinals.

Junior foward Tyler Lundgren (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill) led the offense with three shots. Gordon-Somers-Archer, sophomore midfielder Gino Scardino (West Hempstead, N.Y./H. Frank Carey), junior midfielder Sam Spring (Long Island City, N.Y./NYC Lab School for Collaborative Studies), and sophomore forward Aleco Podias (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) registered two shots for the day.

Sophomore goalkeeper John Guzzo (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) made one save between the posts for the Hawks.
