Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Despite an early second half lead, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team fell to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival SUNY Plattsburgh, 2-1, in double overtime on Friday afternoon.
The Hawks drop to 2-10-1, 1-3-1 SUNYAC and continue their weekend road games tomorrow when they play SUNY Potsdam at 1 p.m. Plattsburgh improves to 8-4-1, 3-1-0 and will host SUNY Oneonta tomorrow at 1 p.m.
After a scoreless first half, Junior midfielder
Sloane Lipshie (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) sent the ball over the Plattsburgh goalie to land the Hawks first on the board in the 65th minute.
Plattsburgh tied the score in the 74th minute when senior forward Devin McMahon fired a rebounded ball off of junior goalkeeper
Mikaela Stiklickas (Nesconset, N.Y./The Stony Brook School) into the net, sending the game into overtime.
Neither team could break the tie in the first overtime period, but Plattsburgh managed to clinch the 2-1 win in the start of the double overtime when senior midfielder Cassidy Clavet launched a shot from 30 yards out to find the far post.
The Cardinals outshot New Paltz, 35-9, and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Clavet notched 13 shots for the Cardinals with four shots on goal.
Offensively, sophomore defender
Monica Rouse (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) registered three shots for the Hawks while Lipshie tallied two. Junior midfielders
Kaite Mulry (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and
Skye Kaler (Charlton, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), senior midfielder
Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun), and sophomore defender
Alexa Appel (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) added to New Paltz's efforts with one shot each.
Stiklickas recorded 11 stops in goal despite the loss.
