POTSDAM, N.Y. – Enjoying a 2-0 lead late into the second half, the men's soccer team at the State University of New York at New Paltz surrendered a pair of goals to SUNY Potsdam as both teams battled to a 2-2 draw in SUNYAC action on Friday evening at Maxcy Turf.
The match was scoreless until freshman
Coltan Goodwine (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) netted a goal in the 62
nd minute thanks to a through ball from senior
Sam Spring (Long Island City, NY/NYC Lab School for Collaborative Studies) to give New Paltz a 1-0 lead.
Senior forward
Tucker Stern (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) followed with a goal in the 72
nd minute, blasting home a cross from junior
Aleco Podias (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun), to hand the Hawks (5-3-5, 1-3-1 SUNYAC) a 2-0 advantage.
The Bears (6-3-2, 1-2-1 SUNYAC) would not go away quietly and got within one after scoring in the 81
st minute.
In the waning seconds of regulation, Potsdam somehow gained possession of a scramble in front of the cage and scored the equalizer with one second on the game clock to force extra time.
In the first overtime session, senior
Charlie Versen (Dobbs Ferry, NY/The Masters School) fired off two shots while in the second session, freshman
Luke Dole (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) tallied two shots and Podias recorded one but neither player could find the back of the net as both teams settled for one point in the league standings.
Overall, the Hawks outshot the Bears 14-10, including a 6-5 shots on goal margin. Dole led the team with four shots with Versen providing three shots off the bench. New Paltz also held the edge in corner attempts, 5-4.
Junior keeper
John Guzzo (Carle Place, NY/Carle Place) made three saves for New Paltz, including one stop in the second overtime.
New Paltz will look for more SUNYAC points tomorrow at SUNY Plattsburgh at 1 p.m. The Cardinals fell to No. 22 SUNY Oneonta 3-0 on Friday afternoon.
