Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Sam Spring (Long Island City, NY/NYC Lab School for Collaborative Studies) enjoyed a two-goal performance as the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team defeated Elms 5-0 in the opening game of the Vassar Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks now improve to 3-0-1 on the season and will play William Paterson at 12 p.m. tomorrow. The five goals by New Paltz are the most by the program since pinning six on Old Westbury on Sept. 15, 2012 (W, 6-1).

Senior midfielder Charlie Versen (Dobbs Ferry, NY/The Masters School) started the scoring barrage for the Hawks in only the 10th minute of play, converting a penalty shot to give New Paltz a 1-0 lead. Classmate Tucker Stern (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) followed with a goal in the 14th minute, thanks to an assist from junior back Matt Carr (Carle Place, NY/Carle Place), to go ahead 2-0.

Spring tacked in his first goal of the day in the 31st minute, tipping in a rebound into the right side of the net to give the Hawks a 3-0 cushion heading into intermission.

In the second half of action freshman midfielder Coltan Goodwine (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) scored his first career goal off a corner kick from sophomore Manny Flory (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) to increase the lead to 4-0.

Spring completed the offense for the Hawks in the 59th minute, scoring his second goal off a set piece that lofted over the Elms keeper and into the net.

Splitting the shutout for New Paltz were junior keeper John Guzzo (Carle Place, NY/Carle Place), who made one save in 75 minutes. Senior Mark Nowak (Newburgh, NY/Marlboro Central) completed the rest of the game in relief.

For the match, New Paltz outshot Elms 19-3 with an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
