Men's Swimming cheers on women's 400-freestyle relay
New Paltz, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz swimming teams made it through their first set of back-to-back meets this season with a combined total of four victories and broke multiple records along the way.

Sophomore Cooper Knapp set the Elting Pool and program record in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4 minutes, 04.9 seconds and he, along with seniors Caleb Treadwell and Chad Plante and sophomore Konstantin Lomeyko, broke the oldest pool relay record in the 400-yard medley relay with a 3:36.05 performance in the first event of the men's 115-88 victory over Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon.

"It felt great to break that relay record," Knapp said. "We always get up for relays. We are a very strong-minded team when it comes to relays. We love some fast relays and love to swim with our teammates.

"Setting the 400-yard individual medley pool and school record was pretty great. That was the longest event I ever swam individually. I'm very happy with my swims today and I'm very happy with where coach has brought us so far."

Knapp also won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.46, while Treadwell touched first in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle with times of 22.59 and 49.65, respectively.Cooper Knapp GIF

Junior Jamie Kaefer also broke the pool's 400-yard individual medley record with a time of 4:37.40 in her team's 117-85 win over Hamilton. Kaefer set the previous record during her freshman season, and was also part of the 200-yard freestyle relay quartet, along with juniors Katie Donlevy, Nicole Lee and Kaleigh O'Halloran, that broke the pool record with a time of 1:38.21.

"The 200-yard freestyle relay was really exciting to break because it has been a barrier for us that we have wanted to break for a while," Kaefer said. "We were a little nervous going into it, but then we decided to just have fun with it and all of the nerves went away.

"My 400-yard individual medley record was nerve racking as well. I've been pretty tired lately. We did a long meet yesterday so that was a little hard to come back from. I just went for it and it was great."

Kaefer also took first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.57, while Lee placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a 25.70 mark. Freshman Lindsay Kranitz won her 200-yard breaststroke race with a time of 2:34.79, while sophomore Chelsea Angulas won the 200-yard backstroke with a 2:13.83 mark.

"Led by [Knapp and Kaefer] our crew is really strong," Hawks head coach Tom Eickelberg said. "They're prepared to do some really special things this season."

Another standout on the day was senior Marc Piliero, who was a part of two first place relays in the 200-yard freestyle (1:32.89), which also included seniors Barrett Celecki, Kevin Sales and Nick Wills, and the 400-yard freestyle (3:18.88), along with Knapp, Treadwell and Sales.

"I started off doing the first event and had a lot of time to take a rest," Piliero said. "By the time I got to the end, two of the last three events I was doing were relays and I love relays. The last one I was able to anchor and I just got so much adrenaline going. I'm happy to do it and that's what gets me through it."

O'Halloran, senior Megan Joseph and freshmen Natalia Giunta and Tessa Griger also won the women's first event of the day, the 400-yard medley relay, with a time of 4:08.29. The Hawks also won their final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 3:44.45 from Joseph, Kaefer, Lee and sophomore Sarah Crespo.

"Today we had to rely on our front runners," Eickelberg said. "The team did a really great job of making sure the priorities we had set forward from the beginning of the week and the season were there. We really made sure that the last third of every race was important to us."Women at the start

Prior to their wins against Hamilton, the Hawks were victorious against Vassar College the previous day with the men winning 148-116 and the women coming out on top 150-118.

"Facing Vassar, who academically is an institution that we strive to be, and getting to beat them in their own pool was really nice," Eickelberg said. "It was a great team win."

Both teams won their first event of the meet, the 200-yard medley relay, with Knapp, Plante, Treadwell and Celecki winning with a time of 1:38.93 and Angulas, Kranitz, Donlevy and Lee earning gold with a 1:52.03 mark. Lee, Angulas, O'Halloran and Crespo also won their final event of the evening, touching first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.20.

Knapp won three individual: the 100-yard backstroke (51.17), the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.41) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.51). Treadwell took the gold in the 50-yard freestyle (22.5) and 100-yard freestyle (49.94), while Lomeyko touched first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.57).

On the women's side, Donlevy also won three individual events: the 50-yard freestyle (25.62), the 100-yard freestyle (55.58) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.18). Kaefer earned the gold in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.02) and 200-yard individual medley (2:14.07), while Angulas touched first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.61).

"It's comforting to know that we can do back-to-back meets," Kaefer said. "We have a three-day championship meet back-to-back-to-back at the end of the year. So, if we can do it now it's going to be a lot easier during the end of the season."
