Ewing, NY —The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team finished second out of seven teams at The College of New Jersey Invite over the weekend, while the men placed fourth of six teams.

The women were only behind host The College of New Jersey and finished ahead of DII East Stroudsburg University and West Chester University. The men also finished ahead of West Chester.

"We had a really strong weekend and posted a lot of really impressive times," Hawks head coach Tom Eickelberg said.

Cooper Knapp GIFThe highlight from the weekend took place on Sunday, when sophomore Cooper Knapp posted a time of 1 minute, 47.4 seconds in the 200-yard butterfly, breaking the program record which Knapp set last season. He lowered his own SUNYAC record in the event and met NCAA B cut qualifications. It is currently the second-best time in the country in the 200 butterfly, just behind Jon Zimdars of Kenyon College who notched a 1:46.43 mark in the event this past weekend.

"Cooper probably punched his ticket to nationals, given the way the times have played out so far," Eickelberg said. "I'm really excited for that."

Knapp was also part of the team's 400-yard freestyle relay squad that finished just behind TCNJ with a time of 3:13.13, along with seniors Caleb Treadwell and Kevin Sales and freshman Nolan West.

On the women's side, junior Jamie Kaefer won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.84 and was part of the Hawks' first place 400 freestyle relay team along with junior Katie Donlevy and sophomores Chelsea Angulas and Sarah Crespo that posted a time of 3:36.68.

"On the last day we had some really nice showings from our distance swimmers," Eickelberg said. "They put together some really nice performances all weekend."

Knapp and Kaefer put on a strong showing the previous day as well, as both swimmers won the 400-yard individual medley with times of 4:04.10 and 4:35.84, respectively.

Treadwell also touched first in an individual event, as he posted a 52.43 mark in the 100-yard butterfly. He was also part of the 200-yard medley relay team that narrowly missed first place with a time of 1:36.42, along with Knapp, Sales and senior Colin Duell.

The women's 200 medley relay of Donlevy, Angulas, senior Megan Joseph and junior Nicole Lee also just barely finished in second by less than a second with a time of 1:50.98.

On the first day of action, Knapp and Kaefer began their strong weekends by earning the gold in the 200-yard individual medley with times of 1:53.65 and 2:08.91, respectively. Kaefer missed breaking the program record, 2:08.62 held by Yuka Suzuka '13 from 2012, by less than a second.

Kaefer, Donlevy, Angulas and freshman Lindsay Kranitz earned first place in the 400-yard medley relay with a 4:00.34 mark.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Donlevy, Lee, Angulas and junior Kaleigh O'Halloran finished in second place by less than a second with a time of 1:39.90, while Joseph, Kaefer, Crespo and senior Molly McCulloch were just behind them with a 1:40.02 mark.

On the men's side, Treadwell, Sales, Knapp and senior Marc Piliero posted a season-best 1:28.49 in the 200 freestyle relay.

The Hawks' next meet will not be until Jan. 12 when they travel to SUNY Cortland. Eickelberg that his teams will simultaneously stay in shape and get some relaxation over the course of the next month.

"We're going to have some really strong training over the next four weeks and get some rest as well," he said.
