Men’s Swimming In Second; Knapp Sets NCAA B-Cut In Day Two of 2017 SUNYACs

Results

BUFFALO – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team put together a solid performance on Friday in the second day of the 2017 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships, jumping up one spot to second place in the team standings.

Overall, the Hawks have 352.5 points and trail Geneseo (689.5). Fredonia is in third with 305.5 points with Cortland in fourth with 299 points.

The highlight of the evening was the performance by freshman Cooper Knapp (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) who enjoyed an NCAA B-cut time in the 100 back finals with his first-place reading of 50.37, eclipsing the B-cut standard time of 50.54.

In the 100 fly finals, Knapp placed second with a reading of 50.26, but earlier in the day in the prelims of the 100 fly, Knapp set another program record with a mark of 50.17, breaking the previous standard of 51.11 held by Caleb Treadwell (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) in 2016. Treadwell placed fourth in 100 fly, touching the wall in 50.84.

The 200 medley relay team comprised of Knapp, senior Matt Alfultis (Waterford, Conn./Waterford), Treadwell and senior Jeffrey Pietkiewicz (Fremont, Calif./Irvington) placed second with a mark of 1:33.04, a new program record that bested the older time of 1:33.34, set in 2016 (Treadwell/Lindgren/Cooke/Koenig).

Junior Barrett Celecki (Barneveld, N.Y./Holland Patent) placed third in the 200 free with a mark of 1:42.91 while the 800 free relay quartet of junior Matthew Kessler (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall Central), junior Nick Wills (Stratford, Conn./Stratford), sophomore Joe Galante (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) and Celecki took home fourth place with a time of 7:10.11.

Galante brought home fifth place in the 400 IM with a reading of 4:17.83 while Alfultis clocked a 59.45 in the 100-breast final for sixth place.

Tomorrow marks the final day of the 2017 SUNYAC Championships as the events will be the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay to close the weekend.
