Box Score Schenectady, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team continued its opening season road trip Saturday, as it took on Union College.
The Hawks (0-2), coming off tough a 2-1 defeat against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Friday, played well and put pressure on the Dutch, but couldn't capitalize on their chances in the final third of the field. As for Union (2-0), it put away one of its seven chances on net to propel the, 1-0 victory.
"Team was much better today," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Kyle Clancy said. "Very tough loss based on how well we played. Much better pressure and work to win the ball back, and much better winning 50-50's."
The Hawks garnered early opportunities, putting three shots on frame and earning a corner within the first 15 minutes of action, but Union's defense, backed by goalie John Welzman (five saves) stayed firm.
The game was scoreless at the half, but the Dutch broke the stalemate in the 69
th minute after a goal by Ethan Strauss.
SUNY New Paltz out-shot Union, 13-7, and totaled seven corners throughout the game, but the Hawks could not secure the equalizer, and ultimately took their second loss of the year.
Kevin Doorly led SUNY New Paltz with two shots on net, while
John Guzzo, who got the start in goal, finished with three saves.
Despite the defeat, Clancy was proud of the way his team performed and improved from Friday.
"Possession improved tremendously and we created more chances, just struggled a bit to complete plays in the final third," Clancy said. "We need to improve a bit with our final runs and a bit better with our deliveries in the box, but very proud of the teams effort though. It's a great step in the right direction."
The Hawks will look to pick up their first win Tuesday, when they travel to SUNY Purchase to take on the Panthers at 7 p.m.
