SUNY New Paltz Swimming vs. Ramapo College on Senior Day
New Paltz, NY -- After suffering a tough loss Friday against SUNY Cortland, the men's and women's swimming teams looked to bounce back Saturday afternoon when they hosted Ramapo College in Elting Pool. The women did just that, defeating the Road Runners by a score of 143-118, while the men swam well but ultimately lost by a 146-116 tally. The women improved to 5-1 at dual-meets, while the men fell to 3-3.
"Getting the win today was definitely a high point in the season for us," said Hawks sophomore Samantha Woll. "Yesterday we were all a little tired and we definitely didn't have our minds in it. Today we all came back from the loss and really wanted to win and our mindset was in the right place."
SUNY New Paltz held its Senior Day as well, as seniors Barrett Celecki, Colin Duell, Marc Piliero, Chad Plante, Kevin Sales, Caleb Treadwell, Nick Wills, Katherine Cavanaugh, Lindsay Feminella, Megan Joseph, Molly McCulloch and Bridget Roche were honored prior to the start of the meet.
Joseph won two individual events on the day, including the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 12.32 seconds) and 200 breaststroke (2:37.74). Treadwell touched first in the 100-yard butterfly (55.35) and finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.69) by less than one-tenth of a second. Celecki placed first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:37.05) and second in the 500 freestyle (5:06.86).
"Watching the seniors swim their last home meet was a bittersweet moment," Hawks coach Tom Eickelberg said. "You sometimes forget how much each person gives to this program and watching them leave is a difficult thing."
Despite their victory, things did not start off well for the women as they began the meet by losing their first 200-yard medley relay at a non-relay meet all season.
"You could tell that they were pretty upset," Eickelberg said. "That really got them pumped up to win the meet after that. We take losing really seriously and that was a nice turning point today."
Joseph, McCulloch, junior Kaleigh O'Halloran and sophomore Chelsea Angulas notched a second-place finish in the event with a 1:54.36 mark.
The men continued their dominance in the 200 medley relay, as the quartet of Treadwell, Plante, Sale and sophomore Cooper Knapp finished first with a time of 1:37.69.
After winning all three of his individual events Friday, Knapp had a repeat performance today as he touched first in the 200 free (1:45.71), 100 free (48.05) and 200-yard individual medley (1:58.00). Sophomore Konstantin Lomeyko contributed by winning the 200 fly (2:04.25).
"All of us were tired, but we all got through it," SUNY New Paltz junior Joe Galante said. "As a team, we did pretty well even though we lost. Given the circumstances, we performed well. As long as all of us race to our maximum effort, then that's all that we could ask for."
On the women's side, junior Jamie Kaefer won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.86 and 200 individual medley with a 2:16.95 mark, and she placed second in the 200-yard backstroke by clocking in at 2:12.50. Junior Katie Donlevy also had a strong performance, winning the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.11 and finishing second in the 50 free and 100 free with times of 25.43 and 55.42, respectively.
Junior Whitney Knowlton-Wardle chipped in by touching first in the 500 freestyle (5:50.17), while junior Degen Mariniello won the 1,000 freestyle (12:01.61).
The women closed out the meet by finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 1:41.06 mark, posted by Donlevy, Kaefer, Angulas and junior Nicole Lee. The men placed second in the event, as Celecki, Sales, Piliero and freshman Nolan West clocked in at 1:32.27.
"We were really excited to get the win today," Lee said. "We came back after Cortland last night and were a little disappointed. Coming back from a tough loss is always a hard thing. Yesterday we missed some important races where we got out touched, but today we really worked on that and I'm really proud of how we came back."
