The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team already made history with earning the No. 2 seed in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament, but the Hawks aren't yet satisfied with the seed or the extra home game. They're aiming for the program's first ever conference championship.
"No matter who we play we're going to come out and play strong and we know how to adjust to any team that we played in the SUNYAC this year," said SUNY New Paltz sophomore midfielder
Schuyler Mann. "Every team is good. [We] can't [over] look any team and we're going to come out strong on Wednesday. We're looking forward to a big game."
The Hawks (11-5-1) ended the regular season in an exciting 2-1 victory over SUNY Oneonta Oct. 20, playing one of the best games of the season against the No. 7 regionally ranked and defending conference champion Red Dragons. SUNY New Paltz had a great crowd during the game and is hoping to get the same atmosphere in its first home playoff game in more than a decade.
"The atmosphere during the Oneonta game was absolutely great and hopefully we can get a huge turnout on Wednesday," Mann said. "It just gives us a lot of momentum and it's just great to have all the guys come out and support us. It means a lot."
With The College at Brockport defeating Plattsburgh State Saturday, 2-0, the Hawks will have a re-match against the Golden Eagles, who they tied on the road Oct. 5.
Both goals scored during that game were netted late, as the Hawks took an opening lead in the 86th minute, which they quickly saw vanish with The College at Brockport tying the game at one in the 90th.
The Hawks held the slight advantage in shots (19-16) and shots on target (9-6), while each team earned six corner kick opportunities on the day.
"We just got to lock down on the attacking guys on Brockport," Mann said. "We did a very good job of picking a part their defense during that game and now basically, we just need to get our defense down and prevent Brockport's offense."
The No. 2 seeded Hawks are set to take on the No. 3 seeded Golden Eagles Wednesday at 1 p.m., with the winner taking on either No. 1 seed SUNY Cortland or No. 4 seed SUNY Oneonta.
Gates open at 12 p.m. on the South Turf Field Wednesday. There is a $5 admission fee for adults, $3 for children and free for SUNYAC students with I.D. Parking will be available at Lenape Hall and South Parking Lot.
