Box Score Brockport, NY — It was a scoreless game between the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team and hosting The College at Brockport Friday afternoon until
James Maltes won the ball atop of the box and fired his shot past the keeper for his first collegiate goal. The jubilation of taking the lead in the 86
th minute was deflated, however, as the Golden Eagles tied up the match in the 90
th, which ultimately prompted the 1-1 tie.
"Unfortunate to give the lead up so quickly and with so little time left, but it's a good lesson to learn from," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Kyle Clancy. "I was proud of the effort by the team not to collapse and to fight hard for an important point on the road."
SUNY New Paltz, coming off a huge win over previously undefeated SUNY Cortland, needed a win over the Golden Eagles to sit atop of the conference standings. However, the tie not only kept the Hawks in second in the conference standings, but also gave The College at Brockport its first blemish on its unbeaten SUNYAC record.
The Hawks held the advantage on shots, 19-16, including an 8-5 advantage in the second half, while both teams earned six corners in the game.
Following the 1-1 tie at regulation, the two squads went into extra time where SUNY New Paltz recorded two shots and the Golden Eagles one. Neither created enough chances to steal the win, resulting in the one-all stalemate.
"Tough ending for us," Clancy said. "Really well fought game by both teams. Our guys struggled to posses in the first half, but really did well adjusting to the pressure second half and created some real good chances leading up to a great first goal by Maltes."
The Hawks are back in action Saturday, as they visit SUNY Geneseo for a 1 p.m. match up.
