Box Score Saratoga Springs, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team won its second straight game Saturday, handily defeating Union College, 4-1.
"It was a great result, excellent in possession again, helping to create a lot of good chances," said Hawks coach
Kyle Clancy. "Also very proud of the team D today. Worked hard all over the field, put good pressure on the ball and defended the box much better. I'm happy to see the team play a full 90."
The team, playing on the campus of Skidmore College, came off a dramatic win over the Thoroughbreds Friday, scoring the game-winning goal in the 90
th minute. On Saturday, the Hawks didn't waste any time and carried over their momentum against the Dutchmen.
Kevin Doorley got it started in the fourth minute, burying a low shot off a deflection and putting it past Union keeper Jonathan Graziosi.
Salvador Lopez Jr. knotted up the game about 10 minutes later, but SUNY New Paltz added one more before the half to re-take the lead.
James Hennessy found freshman
Ryan Stevens, who curled a shot from about 30 yards outside the corner of the box and placing it upper 90 toward the back post for his first collegiate goal he'll likely never forget.
"Ryan's goal was a beauty. Great individual effort," Clancy said. "But overall we are doing a much better job in the early part of the season finishing our chances."
Schuyler Mann added to the Hawks lead 10 minutes into the second half, finding a pass from Doorley and slotting his shot low inside the box past Graziosi.
Luke Dole then put away SUNY New Paltz's final goal, finishing off a Doorley corner to solidify the 4-1 victory.
The Hawks out-shot the Dutchmen, 11-9, in the game and also held the advantage on set pieces, winning 10 corners in the game to Union's two. Mar DePasquale got the start in goal for SUNY New Paltz and registered three saves on the day, while Doorley led his team with a goal and two assists on the day.
SUNY New Paltz is back on the field Monday, traveling to New Haven, Connecticut to take on Albertus Magnus College for a 6 p.m. game.
