Box Score Poughkeepsie, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz couldn't overcome an early goal deficit Wednesday at cross-river rival Vassar College (4-1) and fell, 1-0, in a tight game.
"Unfortunately we were outplayed in the first half," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Kyle Clancy. "We had a tough time with our shape and I made a bad call with the system today. So unfortunately, I'll put the blame on myself for us going down, 1-0."
The Hawks (4-2) went into the match averaging more than three goals per game, but Wednesday put up a season-low one shot on goal and just 11 shots total. The Brewers out-shot SUNY New Paltz (14-11) and also held the advantage on corners (7-4). All four corners came in the second half for the Hawks, while Vassar earned three in the first 45 minutes, capitalizing on one in the 32
nd minute.
Henrik Olsson gave the Brewers the goal advantage after putting away his attempt off a corner from Tyler Gilmore on the right side.
Although the Hawks created more chances in the second half, they couldn't generate enough to knot up the score and ultimately took just their second loss of the season.
John Guzzo returned from injury for SUNY New Paltz and got the start in net, making six saves in the game.
"We made some good adjustments and really played well in the second half," Clancy said. "We had a few chances, but not as many as previous games and just couldn't put the few we had away. It will be a game we will learn from to help us prepare against another strong opponent Saturday."
The Hawks are looking to get back in the win column Saturday when it travels to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to take on King's College at 7 p.m.
