Doorley Scores Twice in SUNY New Paltz Men's Soccer's 2-0 Win Over Fredonia State

| By:
Box Score New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team opened up State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC) play Friday with a convincing, 2-0 win over visiting Fredonia State.

The Hawks (6-2, 1-0) were more dynamic on the ball than the Blue Devils (2-4-1, 0-1) and capitalized with a goal just more than five minutes into the match.

Manny Flory ran on to a ball heading to the end line, beat his defender and played a ball back in the middle in front of the six-yard box. Kevin Doorley came running in and got his body on the ball to deflect the pass into the back of the net for his sixth of the year.Kevin Doorley GIF

"You can see how confident he is this year and he is an excellent finisher," said SUNY New Paltz coach Kyle Clancy of Doorley. "We tried to have him around the goal as much as we can and he finds the right spots. He knows where to be and his technique is fantastic, so hoping to see more of it for the rest of the season. He is a great finisher. The kid's got some quality."

Doorley added to the Hawks' lead in the 28th minute. Sebastian G-S-Archer played a long lofted ball over the top of the defense, which landed just inside the right side of the 25-yard box. Doorley hustled to meet the pass and beat Fredonia State keeper Ty Bentham (five saves) to the ball. He one touched the ball off the bounce and chipped his shot over the head of Bentham, which sailed into the net for the highlight score.

"With Manny's assist I could see him preparing to but the ball inside. I was just trying to time my run correctly. I kind of got lucky and it just kind of bounced off my chest, I don't even know what, but luckily it went in," Doorley recalled. "And then the second goal, it was just a great ball by Sebastian and I saw the goalie coming out, so I just tried putting it over his head first time."

Clancy reached deep in his bench and gave a lot of his young guys experience Friday after taking the 2-0 lead. The Hawks out-shot the Blue Devils in the first half (6-2) and continued that trend in the second (8-1), as Clancy was also happier with his team's defensive work in the box.

"Sebstian_Manny_chest_bumpI was definitely more pleased in the second half, because we could have given up a couple on set pieces with our poor marking in the first half," he said. "But they were much better in the second half, better clearances, less opportunities, so progress. It was better."

SUNY New Paltz continued garnering chances, as freshmen Spencer Ryczek and Pedro Marshall each had good looks on frame, but Bentham was there to come up with the stop and keep the deficit at two.

It was all the goals either team could muster and for the second-straight game SUNY New Paltz came away with a shutout, as Marc DePasquale made three saves in the victory.

"I think it is huge. It's a big confidence booster," Clancy said. "We had a lot of guys come in, so a lot of guys got experience for the first time in the SUNYAC. It's a quick level, it's a physical level and they got to experience that. I think there were a lot of positives today. It's always good to start, 1-0. When you're at home you got to get points as many times as you can, so it is a good start."

The Hawks are back on the South Turf Field Saturday, taking on a tough Buffalo State team, which earned the third seed in last year's conference tournament, while also claiming an at-large bid in the NCAA tournament.

"[Buffalo State] is a little bit more organized and definitely an athletic group, so they will make it a little bit tougher to break down," Clancy said. "We definitely have to be a bit sharper in possession and we need to defend the box better. Too many open runs today. I thought we were a little disconnected at times too, so just improving a little bit more on both sides of the ball, but they are going to be up for it. They're confident right now. They are playing well, so I am really excited for tomorrow."

The game between the Hawks and the Bengals (5-2, 0-1), who is coming off a 1-0 loss against SUNY Oneonta Friday, is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. To stay up to date with everything #NPHawks be sure to follow on Twitter at @nphawks, Instagram and Facebook at @newpaltzhawks, and subscribe to our Youtube channel, New Paltz Hawks.
