Box Score New Haven, CT — The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team continued its hot start to the season and earned its third-straight victory Monday night against hosting Albertus Magnus College, 4-2.
It didn't take long for the Hawks to get out in front. In the first eight minutes,
Schuyler Mann found
Ryan Martinez just inside the 18-yard box. Martinez lined up and hit a laser that found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
A minute later,
James Hennessy doubled up on the SUNY New Paltz lead with an unassisted score. But, Albertus Magnus answered not long after, putting away its first goal in the 11th minute to cut the advantage, 2-1.
The Hawks created ample chances throughout the game, but espeically in the first 45 minutes, buzzing all around the Falcons box. After totaling 15 shots and eight corners, SUNY New Paltz capitalized just before the end of the half.
Pedro Marshall got a head off a corner, playing a bouncing ball inside the six-yard box.
Luke Dole came crashing in and headed his second goal of the year to push the Hawks ahead, 3-1.
Kevin Doorley added to the cushion and netted his fourth goal of the year, stepping up to take a penalty kick for SUNY New Paltz in the 69
th minute. Albertus Magnus goalkeeper Joe Russo guessed correctly, but Doorley slotted his shot perfectly with enough pace in the left corner for the goal.
The Falcons cut the Hawks lead to two after scoring on a penalty kick of their own in the 86
th minute. However, that was the closest the SUNY New Paltz defense allowed them to get, as it held firm to close out with the 4-2 victory.
"Albertus did a nice job fighting until the end and it was disappointing to give up a late goal," said Hawks coach
Kyle Clancy. "We know we can be better and close out games better. We will look to improve on that this weekend."
SUNY New Paltz out-shot Albertus Magnus, 28-4, in the game and also held the advantage in corners, 11-2. Doorley led the Hawks with six shots, while
Khalil Scott-Ludewig followed with four.
Marc DePasquale got the start in goal for SUNY New Paltz and in 76 minutes faced one shot.
Declan Costello came in for the last 14 minutes or so and faced one shot as well, each letting up one goal.
"We did a nice job creating a lot of chances, but probably should have put more away," Clancy said. "While it is nice to start 3-0, we are going to have to play little better and clean up some areas in order to continue to be successful."
