SUNY New Paltz Men's Soccer Rout Lehman College, 5-0

| By:
Box Score New Paltz, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team bounced back from its first loss of the season to earn a dominating, 5-0, victory over Lehman College Sunday.

"I'm really proud of them," said Hawks coach Kyle Clancy. "We talked about how we given up goals in the last five minutes in both halves yesterday. The big things we were focusing on were just improving our mindset and being more focused, alert and being able to execute better, especially in the last five [minutes], but the whole game... So to have a shut out today it shows that we improved there and that is what we're looking to do."

After a last-second defeat to the hands of visiting New York University Saturday, SUNY New Paltz (5-1) knew the energy had to remain high throughout the 90-minute match against the Lightning. The Hawks were in command from the opening whistle, quickly generating good combinations within the oppositions defensive third.Sebastian G-S-Archer GIF

Kevin Doorley helped SUNY New Paltz get on the board in the 9th minute, first earning a corner off a well-played ball by Ryan Martinez down the right flank. Doorley took the corner and found the head of Luke Dole who sent the cross back into the middle of the six-yard box, where Sebastian G-S-Archer finished for the first goal of the day.

SUNY New Paltz doubled up on the lead in the 17th minute, as Martinez out worked his man down the right sideline, beating him to the end line and sending a ball back into the box, which Doorley one-timed past Lehman keeper Chris Mulholland for the goal.

"We knew this was a huge game to bounce-back from and we just came out on fire right from the start," said Martinez. "Just linking up from the three up top, so it was definitely great to get this win and just to bounce back from the loss yesterday."

With a 2-0 lead heading into the break, Clancy reiterated to his team to keep the energy high and finish the game strong. The Hawks quickly responded with a goal in the 47th minute on a beautiful finish by Khalil Scott-Ludewig. After receiving a pass from Mikey Considine on the left half, Scott-Ludewig took a touch around a defender and launched a shot from the top of the box, which was placed perfectly into the top right corner of the net that deflected off the fingertips of Mulholland and into the goal.

Less than two minutes later, SUNY New Paltz won back possession and capitalized again. Martinez sliced a through ball to defensive back Brendan McGaley who was making an overlapping run on the right side. McGaley slotted his shot off the inside of the left post and into goal.

"Probably the best thing we saw today was that we thought at the end of the first half it was just quiet. It was a little slow, a little sloppy, so to come out and score two goals in the first five minutes with the starting group and see the energy pick up and see the level pick up that was awesome to see," Clancy said. "I told the guys who was going in that doesn't drop off the entire half. I think that shows the depth that we have that they kept the level high the whole game."

Gordon-Somers-Archer added one more for good measure, heading in a corner played in by James Maltes in the 65th minute to make the score, 5-0.

"We just knew we were going to have the opportunities and bury them when we had the chances," Martinez said. "Luckily I was able to link up with Kevin one time and even McGaley coming down the side from the outside back position, so it was just great getting everyone involved on the attack and just finishing the chances that we had."

The Hawks out-shot the Lightning (21-10), with 10 of their shots on frame, and also held the advantage on corner kicks, 8-2. All three keepers (Marc DePasquale, John Guzzo, Declan Costello) saw time in net for the team, with DePasquale getting the start and earning the win after making one save in 45 minutes.

SUNY New Paltz hopes to get a winning streak going, as it heads to Vassar College Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game. To stay up to date with everything #NPHawks be sure to follow on Twitter at @nphawksInstagram and Facebook at @newpaltzhawks, and subscribe to our Youtube channel, New Paltz Hawks.
