The State University of New York at New Paltz Swimming team will travel to Vassar Friday night to take on the hosting Brewers and Franklin & Marshall College in a tri-meet.
The Hawks are coming off of their first win of the season against Adelphi University and will need to make another big effort in order to win their second meet in a row. SUNY New Paltz had some accomplished performances as several swims placed top five in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), including freshman Kirsten Giovanniello who won SUNYAC female swimmer of the week.Â
Giovanniello won the women's 200-yard butterfly and women's 200-yard freestyle, while also taking part in the women's 400-yard medley relay that also resulted in a victory for the Hawks. Giovanniello now holds top five SUNYAC times in four separate events, making her lineup a nightmare for opposing teams. Senior Chelsea Angulas also had a stellar day, winning the women's 50-yard freestyle and taking part in two winning relays.
"After a win on both sides at the Adelphi meet we reestablished our love for racing," said Hawks senior Samantha Woll.Â
The SUNY New Paltz men's team leaned on its sophomore class against the Panthers, as the Hawks combined for a total of four individual victories and assisted in the two winning relays. Sophomore Mitch Chappel won the 200-yard freestyle with authority as he broke the 1 minute, 50 second time barrier going a remarkable 1 minute, 49.06 seconds. Chappell also led off the men's 400-yard freestyle relay in an incredible time of 48.85 seconds and anchored in the 400-yard medley relay, both resulting in Hawks victories.Â
Sophomore Jared Finn also had a meet to remember as he won the men's 100-yard freestyle and assisted in the two relay wins. Ethan Bonney, who has proven to be the Hawks workhorse at this point cashed in with two winning efforts and a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke.Â
"Following the loss against Hartwick we knew we had to bring back the energy that New Paltz Swimming is about," said Finn following the win against Adelphi University.
Bonney will face his first true test in the 1000 freestyle this season when the Hawks travel to Vassar as the Brewers Robbie Perot has gone a 9:57 1000 yard free already this season.
Both Vassar and the Diplomats are prestigious Division III programs that will be difficult for SUNY New Paltz to defeat. The Brewers are off to a 2-2 record on the men's side, while the women are 3-1. Some swimmers to watch out for on the men's side for Vassar are Robbie Perot, Jacob Mier and Maxwell White who all posted some solid swims in their most recent meet against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. As for the Brewers women's team, Lillian Lowenthal, Jessilyn Ecklund, Grace Myers and Brynn Lautenbacher all won individual events in their most recent tough loss to RPI.Â
Franklin & Marshall have gotten out to a 4-0 start on the men's side, while the women are 4-1. Some Swimmers to watch out for the Diplomats are Brendan Cline, Alex Sang, Chris Schiavone and Willem Stoll. The group contains some NCAA Division III finalists as well as All-Americans who have proven to be able to compete with anyone on the Division III level. The Hawks will need a big effort from their sprint freestylers to match this group. On the women's side Julie McFadden Katherine Hirsch and Tara Kupsky competed with purpose combining for six top two spots in individual events in their latest meet against Swarthmore.Â
The last time the Hawks took on the Brewers they lost on both sides, but showed a lot of heart as Elting Pool was deafening. In order for SUNY New Paltz to come out victorious Friday it will need to travel with that same energy into hostile territory.Â
SUNY New Paltz is set to take on Vassar and Franklin and Marshall in Kresge Pool Friday at 5 p.m.
