Box Score 2 Orlando, FL — With a rain filled night Tuesday, the State University of New York at New Paltz tennis team couldn't finish its nail-biting game against Springfield College. Instead, the match was delayed until Wednesday afternoon following the Hawks' match against Goucher College. The anticipation was well worth the wait, as SUNY New Paltz stayed perfect on the season after defeating both the Gophers and the Pride Wednesday in 8-1 and 5-4 decisions, respectively.
"The freshmen, the way they dig in, I've never seen anything like it," said Hawks coach
Rob Bruley. "It's becoming infectious to the rest of the team."
Playing on clay for the first time all season at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Center in Orlando, SUNY New Paltz rolled through Goucher College Wednesday morning. Strong doubles play one through three, set the stage for a dominating match.
Trinity Chow and
Laura Koob won at first doubles, 8-1, with duos
Victoria Zezula and
Lindsay Haley, and
Courtney Koran and
Emma Messenger earning 8-4 victories in second and third doubles, respectively.
Chow went on and defeated the Gophers' Anais Gill, 7-6, 6-4 in first singles, while
Jenna Grandville earned a 6-1, 6-3 win in third singles.
Courtney Koran (6-4, 6-3) and
Maddy Bourne (6-1, 6-4) each won comfortably in fourth and sixth singles, respectively, while
Lindsay Haley dominated Katie Marzerka in fifth singles, 6-0, 6-2.
The only loss the Hawks had in the match was in second singles, where
Victoria Zezula moved up to Koob's usual spot, but with Bruley wanting to keep Koob fresh for her matchup against Springfield, Zezula took on Mandile Mpofu in the two-spot and forced three sets. Zezula battled to win the first, 7-5, but then Mpofu won 6-2, 10-1 in the next two sets to take the match.
"Sold performance in doubles to set us up nicely for a strong singles match," Bruley said.
After a short break, the Hawks gathered to watch Koob take on Cara Freadman, with the winner deciding the match.
SUNY New Paltz and Springfield went into the final match tied at four with the Pride winning two of three doubles matches, while the Hawks took first, fifth and sixth singles courtesy of Chow, Koran and Bourne, respectively.
Koob finished up the night before earning a set over Freadman and continued to grit through a tight game Wednesday, ultimately winning, 7-6, 6-2 to keep her team undefeated on the season.
"Great come back on singles after being 2-1 down after doubles," Bruley said. "Freshman came through big in singles match, especially Laura closing out the match."
SUNY New Paltz improved to 12-0 on the season and has one last test in George Fox University before heading back home to finish out its regular season. The Hawks are set to face the Bruins at 3:30 p.m.
