Box Score 2 Poughkeepsie, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis program earned a lot of work this weekend in the Vassar Scramble against the hosting Brewers and New York University, and ended the tournament with three singles victories and a doubles win.
Though SUNY New Paltz won just four of the 41 matches it played, there were some impressive performances throughout the weekend.
"We are playing some of the best tennis players in the northeast, and we gave a very good account of ourselves," said Hawks coach Rob Bruley on his team's performance. "We use these matches against regionally ranked players as professional development to improve their game against high level players under 100 percent pressure."
Three of those victories came in singles play on Saturday. Senior Trinity Chow came away with a victory against the Violets' Jimena Menendez in the second round of singles, 6-4, 6-1. After getting swept in the first set against NYU's Pooja Muvva, junior Onalee Batcheller stormed back to win 16 of the next 17 game points in the last two sets, winning 0-6, 6-0, 10-1 in three sets. Senior Isabella Del La Rocha would also walk away with a victory against the Brewers' Nicole Pihlstrom 6-4, 6-2.
The Hawks' fourth win of the day came in Round 1 doubles play, when freshman Isabel van der Veen and sophomore Loretta Donovan defeated the Violets' Muvva and Phoebe Su, 8-2. Sophomore Heavenly White took a shot at a fifth win for SUNY New Paltz after winning her first set and forcing a 5-5 tie in the second set, but would ultimately lose her match to the Violets' Jamaica Buyse 4-6, 7-5, 10-5.
Day 2 action was not as successful, as the Hawks' failed to secure a victory, but had some solid performances against the two schools. This included a battle by Chow and freshman Anya Bartek against Vassar's Sofie Shen and Melina Stavropoulos, which resulted in a tight 8-5 loss. Batcheller had a bid for her second win of the scramble, but took the loss to the Violets' Karina Jensrud 7-6, 6-1.
"In all our matches, our team stayed strong and competed for every point," said Bruley. "Tennis is a game where you improve and learn by playing stronger players. This level of competition sets us up for next weekend's ITA Regional Championships where, if we are to be successful, we will be competing against high level players."
There was no team scoring throughout the tournament.
SUNY New Paltz returns to action Saturday for another weekend tournament, the William Smith Tournament in Geneva, NY. The first round of the tournament is set to begin at a time to be determined.
