It has been 10 years since the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team saw consecutive playoff action in the SUNYAC Championship Tournament. This Saturday will mark only the third time in program history the Hawks have made consecutive trips to the postseason season as they host the Golden Eagles of the College at Brockport.
Earlier this season, SUNY New Paltz defeated Brockport 2-0 on the Golden Eagles home turf. Since their first match against each other in 1995, the season series stands at 4-17-6 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
Brockport finished the 2022 regular season Wednesday with a 2-1 away win at Nazareth College for a 5-8-3 overall record and a 3-5-1 SUNYAC mark. Wednesday's 2-0 victory over the Golden Flyers marked only the third time this season that Brockport scored two goals in a game. Opponents have limited the Golden Eagles to just 10 goals this season, for a 0.63 goals per game average, even with Brockport taking 198 shots to its foes 170. The Golden Eagles have been shut out nine times this season.
Leading Brockport in scoring has been senior midfielder Franchesca Polcaro (East Syracuse, NY) with four goals; senior forward Kiley Longin (Fishkill,NY) adds two goals, as does sophomore forward Maryalice Skutnik (Marilla, NY). First year players, forward Lucy Crounce (Scotia, NY) and midfielder Kaleigh Pettit (Newark, NY) each have one goal on the year, with Pettit adding two assists.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles have given up 24 goals for a 1.50 goals-against-average, yet have limited their opponents to 58 corner kicks, compared to Brockport's 80. Graduate student goalie Kayla Usborne (Knoxboro, NY) has started 14 of 16 games, giving up 17 goals for a 1.32 goals-against-average with 48 saves and three shutouts on the year.
The Hawks are coming off their best regular season since 2012, with a record of 10-3-2 and a SUNYAC record of 6-2-1. The 10 wins in 2022 marks only the 10th time in the 37-year history of New Paltz women's soccer that a team has achieved double-figure wins in a season.
