NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team (3-1) handed a 108-75 setback to cross-river rival Vassar College (0-4) on Saturday afternoon at Elting Pool.
Five Hawks accounted four six first-place finishes. Leading the charge was senior
Billy Papetti (Long Beach, N.Y.), who had an outstanding meet in each of his three events. Papetti won both the 50 freestyle (22.10) and the 100 freestyle (49.67) and also turned in a swift 22.05 leading off New Paltz's “A” 200 freestyle relay.
Despite trailing at the halfway point, junior
Pete Nastasi (Monroe, N.Y.) fired off a final 100 of 56.56 to gain a winning time of 1:50.99 in the 200 freestyle.
Junior
Marc Battisti (East Meadow, N.Y.) headed an all-New Paltz field in the 400 individual medley (4:39.52), while senior
Matt Demerest (Long Beach, N.Y.) used a strong front half to take the 100 butterfly in 57.95. Senior
Rob Webb (Hillsborough, N.J.) rounded out the Hawks who scored first-place points individually with a 58.95 performance in the 100 backstroke.
Buoyed by Webb's 1:03.59 split during the breaststroke leg, New Paltz won by nearly seven seconds in the 400 medley relay, registering a time of 3:50.90. The winning contingent consisted of junior
Corey Lomas (Wilbraham, Mass.), Webb, Demerest and junior
Jeremy Borrelli (Vestal, N.Y.).
The blue and orange filed all of its entries for the 500 freestyle, the 100 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle relay as exhibition, meaning that the Hawks did not factor into the meet scoring in all three events. Nastasi took the 500 freestyle (4:59.81) and followed the win up with a 1:07.22 triumph in the 100 breaststroke. On the afternoon, Nastasi was the top finisher in three individual events, though only his victory in the 200 freestyle counted toward the meet's scoring. Papetti, Borrelli, Demerest and senior
Pat Rathbun (Long Valley, N.J.) closed the book on the meet with the fastest time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.68).
For Vassar, Simon Whitelaw scored first-place points in the 1000 freestyle (11:23.17) and the 500 freestyle (5:36.22), though his 500 freestyle win came by virtue of New Paltz's three swimmers entering the event as exhibition.
The Hawks will hone their training over the next few weeks toward the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, which will run from Dec. 3-5 at Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
