EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team continued to garner regional respect Friday evening, as the Hawks had a highly-competitive showing on the first day of the 2010 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championships held at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
The first session consisted only of the 200 medley relay, the 1650 freestyle and 1-meter diving.
New Paltz's “A” relay fell just short of the NCAA provisional cut (1:48.00) in the 200 medley relay, as the foursome of sophomore
Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), senior
Becky Baker (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), sophomore
Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y.) and junior
Christine Rieth (Penfield, N.Y.) combined for a swift time of 1:48.28. That mark, which placed them third out of 10, erased the former meet record of 1:49.68 set by Albright College's contingent of Cindy Barner, Rachel Cantwell, Cheyenne Gehman and Erin Jagielski in 2004. The Stevens Institute of Technology, however, will ultimately have its name etched in the record book, as the Ducks charted an eye-popping 1:45.62, thanks in part to a 22.65 split by Laura Barito in the freestyle leg and a 24.72 split by Louise Moores in the butterfly leg.
Senior
Jessica Lester (Long Beach, N.Y.) hovered around 18-minute pace for most of the 1650 freestyle but was unable to dip under. She clocked a time of 18:04.84, placing fourth out of 20 swimmers in the event. Freshman
Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J.) finished right behind her, touching at 18:08.36 to claim fifth.
The Hawks are currently in fourth place out of 10 teams with 134 points.
Tomorrow morning's session will consist of the 200 backstroke, the 100 freestyle, the 200 butterfly, the 200 breaststroke and the 800 freestyle relay.
