Oneonta, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz swimming programs participated in the Hardwick/Oneonta Tri-meet Saturday.
The SUNY New Paltz women's team beat both Hartwick and Oneonta 157-104 and 164-123 in separate dual meet scores, respectively. The men's Hawks didn't fare as well, losing to the opposing Hawks and Red Dragons, 178.5-83.5 and 155-132, respectively.
The women's side started the day by winning the 400-yard medley relay, where the team of Alex Kassian, Delilah Griger, Kelly Donlevy and Julia Iaboni came in first place by eight seconds with a time of 4:14.22. The men's A team (Myles Dower, Mason Kennedy, Nicholas Brown and Venn Engstrom) placed third behind Hartwick and the Red Dragons in the same event with a 3:50.91 finish. In the 1,000-yard freestyle, Kathryn Kolar (12:10.31) and Victoria Bogdanski (12:22.56) placed third and fifth, respectively, for the women's side, while the men's Hawks secured 3-4-5 finishes, with Ethan Bonney (10:40.05), Brandon Molina (10:47.64), and Euan Barclay (10:58.96) finishing back-to-back-to-back.
Kirsten Giovanniello secured the first individual event win on the day for SUNY New Paltz in a tightly contested 200-yard freestyle, where she placed just ahead of the Red Dragons Emma Stephenson with a time of 2:08.52. Iaboni (2:10.50), Taylor Pazderski (2:12.69) and Hannah Fisher (2:20.45) placed fifth, sixth, and eighth, respectively for SUNY New Paltz. In the men's event, Owen Rowlands (1:53.30), Brown (2:00.03) and Ryan Ladue (2:13.40) finished fourth, sixth, and 10th for the Hawks. 
Griger (1:03.54) touched the wall second and Ginny Frazee (1:10.15) placed sixth in the 100-yard backstroke for the women. Dower (56.55) came within three tenths of a second from a win in the men's event, but couldn't pass James Llewellyn in the final seconds. Barber (58.32) completed the race behind Dower in third. Kassian (1:11.73) secured a second individual victory for SUNY New Paltz in the 100-yard backstroke. Kennedy (1:06.11), Xavier Calderon (1:06.26) and Akiva Garfield (1:08.21) finished within two seconds of each other to place third, fourth and fifth.
The women dominated the 200-yard butterfly with a 1-2-3 finish, as Candela Sandoval (2:28.67) narrowly won her first collegiate event as an individual swimmer; Giovanniello (2:28.70) and Angelina Somma (2:29.19) finished behind her. Barber (2:08.85) and Molina (2:14.70) placed fifth and sixth for the men's side. Donlevy secured a victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a 25.87 time, while Engstrom (23.45) completed the race fifth to lead the men in the same event. Kolar (58.80) and Iaboni (59.35) finished second and third in the 100-yard freestyle and Engstrom (51.92) led the men again with a fifth place finish. Griger (2:18.39) and Dower (2:08.69) placed second and third to pace SUNY New Paltz in their respective 200-yard backstrokes.
Kassian secured her second individual and third overall win in the 200-yard breaststroke, concluding the event with a time of 2:37.63. Kennedy (2:23.80) and Rowlands (2:24.71) placed second and third in the men's event. Giovanniello (5:49.09) and Molina (5:09.99) ended in third and fourth in the women's and men's 500 yard freestyle, respectively, although Molina finished just 3.62 seconds behind the winner Mason Delisio. Donlevy won her second race in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.43; Sandoval (1:06.97) placed third for the Hawks. Barber (56.38) closed the race fifth to lead the men in the men's race.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Kassian secured a team-high third individual victory with a time of 2:20.36. In the men's race, Dower (2:07.51) placed second, and Rowlands (2:09.27) and Zac Brown (2:11.56) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Hawks concluded the day with the 400 yard freestyle relay. The women's team of Donlevy, Iaboni, Griger and Sandoval placed second in the race with a time of 3:56.80. The men's quartet of Barber, Steven Macaluso, Leo Litovsky and Engstrom just finished behind Oneonta's A-team to finish in third place.
SUNY New Paltz is back in the pool Nov. 19 when it takes the trip across the Mid-Hudson Bridge to Poughkeepsie for a dual meet at Vassar College. The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
