SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team had a competitive showing at the Union Relays Saturday, placing second out of four teams with 100 points. The Hawks sat just four points back of the first-place U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

Host Union (N.Y.) College racked up 84 points and captured third, while Montclair State University settled for fourth with 78 points.

The Hawks kicked off the afternoon with a solid performance in the 400 medley relay. Sophomore Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led off with a 1:02.88 100 backstroke, while senior Becky Baker (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) covered the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.42 to give the team a 2:12.30 split at the 200 mark. Sophomore Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y.) went a 1:02.07 in her 100 butterfly before junior Christine Rieth (Penfield, N.Y.) brought the race home in 54.40. The quartet combined for a time of 4:08.77.

New Paltz built on that race in the next event, as seniors Jessica Lester (Long Beach, N.Y.) and Marissa Morris (Toms River, N.J.) and Suzuka combined forces in the 300 backstroke relay, placing first with a 3:07.92 standard.

The blue and orange won its third event in a row the following race, as Baker, Marshall and sophomore Anna Jakubek (Harriman, N.Y.) clocked a 3:36.04 in the 300 breaststroke relay.

New Paltz went four events without a win, which allowed Coast Guard to catch up. The Hawks would uncork a swift 1:54.96 in the 200 medley relay to end the drought, as Suzuka, Baker and seniors Kate Genovese (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Allison Wells (Shelton, Conn.) teamed up in the event.

Coast Guard picked up 10 points in the 1-meter diving at the end of the meet, which ultimately pushed the Bears past the Hawks in the team standings.

New Paltz hosts SUNY Oneonta in its home-opener on Friday, Nov. 5, at 4 p.m.
