Hawks Unable to Maintain Early Lead in 146-116 Loss to Coast Guard

Meet Results

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team (1-1) boasted 1-2 finishes in the first two events but were unable to hang on, as the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (1-0) bested New Paltz by a 146-116 score on Saturday afternoon.

The blue and orange opened with a decisive win in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), senior Becky Baker (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), sophomore Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y.) and junior Christine Rieth (Penfield, N.Y.) assembled a quick 1:53.95 to take first, while the quartet of senior Marissa Morris (Toms River, N.J.), sophomore Anna Jakubek (Harriman, N.Y.), senior Kate Genovese (Wantagh, N.Y.) and sophomore Katina Lown (Bohemia, N.Y.) scored important second-place points (1:57.98).

The Hawks continued the trend in the 1000 freestyle, as senior Jessica Lester (Long Beach, N.Y.) clocked a first-place 10:58.79 and was followed by freshman Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J.), who charted a 10:59.13.

While New Paltz stayed competitive the remainder of the meet, the Bears used considerable firepower to claim a lion's share of the all-important first-place finishes. Heidi Gayman and Kimberly Shadwick each were triple-event winners for Coast Guard. Gayman won the 200 freestyle (1:57.68), the 50 freestyle (25.35) and the 100 freestyle (54.47), while Shadwick captured the 100 backstroke (1:01.56), the 200 backstroke (2:14.76) and the 500 freestyle (5:21.79).

For the Hawks, Baker turned in an event-best 1:10.27 in the 100 breaststroke, while Marshall registered the top time in the 200 butterfly (2:17.79).
