Marshall Establishes Two Program Marks on Day 2 of ECACs

Session 2 Results
Session 3 Results

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Saturday featured an unveiling of sorts, as sophomore Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y.) of the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team showcased her ability as an elite swimmer at the NCAA Division III level on the second day of the 2010 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championships at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y.

Saturday included both a morning session and an evening session, giving swimmers ample opportunity to dabble in a wide array of events. New Paltz is holding its own in the team standings, as the Hawks are fourth out of 13 teams with 734.50 points.

Marshall took third out of 25 swimmers in the 200 butterfly, covering the event in a swift 2:07.93. Not only did that time meet NCAA provisional qualification by more than half a second, but it also shattered the program record in the event. Liz Ruggiero set the former school mark of 2:13.92 in 2006.

After the grueling eight-lap butterfly event, Marshall partook in the 200 breaststroke, offering the Hawks' top time of 2:30.75, which placed her seventh in a field of 37.

Her second program-record-setting swim came in the 400 individual medley, as she went a 4:38.74 to place third out of 27 swimmers. Marshall's performance betters the former program standard of 4:42.32, which was established by Liz Delia in 2005.

Senior Becky Baker (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) posted the lone event win for New Paltz on the day. She covered the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.26, topping the 41-person field.

Sophomore Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and senior Marissa Morris (Toms River, N.J.) set the tone for the day, placing among the top 10 in the 200 backstroke. Suzuka touched third in a quick 2:09.62, while Morris' 2:12.66 was good for eighth. Thirty-three swimmers total competed in the event.

In the 100 freestyle, junior Christine Rieth (Penfield, N.Y.) and senior Allison Wells (Shelton, Conn.) led the way for the blue and orange, placing seventh (53.71) and 11th (54.70), respectively, out of 66 competitors.

After Marshall in the 200 breaststroke, two New Paltz swimmers followed in sequence. Baker registered the eighth-place time of 2:31.47, while freshman Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J.) charted a ninth-place 2:31.76.

The 800 freestyle relay quartet of Morris, Allocco, Rieth and senior Jessica Lester (Long Beach, N.Y.) closed out the morning with a fourth-place standard of 7:52.76 in the 800 freestyle relay.

The Hawks kicked off the evening session with a fourth-place performance in the 200 freestyle relay, as New Paltz's “A” contingent went 1:39.76.

Suzuka tied for fifth out of 39 in the 100 backstroke, checking in at 1:00.08. Wells also had a noteworthy swim, covering the race in 1:02.75 to take 12th.

A trio of Hawks filled the ranks of the top 10 in the 200 freestyle. Morris' 1:56.58 led the group with a fourth-place result out of 57, while Rieth and Lester corralled sixth and seventh, respectively, with times of 1:57.37 and 1:57.75.

Sophomore Katina Lown (Bohemia, N.Y.) also recorded a solid time in the 100 breaststroke, as she scored quality points for New Paltz with a 12th-place 1:12.10.

In a 100 butterfly field that saw eight swimmers dip under the one-minute barrier, Suzuka swam the top non-sub-minute mark, taking ninth with a 1:00.24.

One session remains in this three-day meet. New Paltz returns to the Nassau County Aquatics Center pool tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. for the third and final day of competition.
