(RESULTS) Buffalo, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz swimming team finished its season strong in the final day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championships Saturday.
The Hawks concluded their season with some spectacular finals performances on both the men's and the women's side. The men placed fourth overall as a team, while the women came in at third.
The last session started off with sophomore
Ethan Bonney placing second overall in the men's 1,650-yard freestyle. Freshman Zac Brown dropped two full seconds from his prelim to finals time in the men's 200-yard backstroke and took 11th place overall. Junior
Graham Cono and freshman
Owen Rowlands both earned a spot in the men's 200-yard breaststroke finals. Rowlands placed 14th, while Cono came in at eighth. Afterwards Rowlands spoke about his first experience at SUNYACs.
"I had a great experience," he said. "It was a big learning curve from high school championship meets compared to college championship meets."
SUNY New Paltz's women's backstrokers continued to prove themselves at SUNYACs as three swimmers made it to the 200-yard backstroke finals. Junior
Tessa Griger came in 10th place, freshman
Delilah Griger came in fifth place and senior Chelsea Anguals came in fourth. The women's 100-yard freestyle also saw three Hawks final, as senior
Sarah Crespo placed 12th, senior
Samantha Woll placed ninth and freshman
Kelly Donlevy came in eighth. Freshman
Kirsten Giovanniello came through with a strong finals performance, as she dropped a second from prelims in the women's 200-yard butterfly.
Both the Hawks men's and women's team took advantage of finals, as many spots were gained throughout the night. The men finaled three swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle, as senior
Tim Stecher placed 13th overall, sophomore
Mitch Chappell placed ninth and sophomore
Jared Finn placed fourth overall as the latter swam a time of 46.85 seconds. Sophomore
Luke Gamboli had a strong finals performance with a time of 1:57.33 to help him secure ninth place overall.The women's team finished the season with a strong 400 freestyle relay performance in which they placed third overall, getting the bronze medal in the event.
