SUNY New Paltz Swimming Competes in Day Two of TCNJ Invite

Ewing, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz men's and women's swim teams completed day two of their three day competition Saturday at the College of New Jersey Invitational.

On Friday, TCNJ took first overall on both the men's and women's sides, with the men finishing with 467 points and the women with 369. The Hawks women finished second with 208.5 points and the men took third with 131 points. On Saturday, the Lions won all but two events, and heading into Sunday lead on both the men's and women's sides through 26 events with scores of 1,028 and 834. SUNY New Paltz is third on both the men's (325 points) and women's (492.5) sides, while Merchant Marine Academy ranks second on both sides (536.5 for the women, 710 for the men). Salisbury University, meanwhile, with scores of 332 (women) and 184 (men) is fourth through day two.

The Hawks finished with three second-place finishes on the day, in the women's 200-yard medley relay, the women's 100-yard breaststroke and women's 100-yard backstroke. The relay team of Delilah Griger, Alex Kassian, Kelly Donlevy, and Kathryn Kolar finished with a time of 1 minute, 51.35 seconds — 1.67 seconds behind the first-place Lions in that event. Kassian, with a breaststroke time of 1:09.36, finished behind TCNJ's Haley Crispell, who timed in at 1:08.3. Griger's backstroke time was 1:01.90.

SUNY New Paltz also placed ninth, 11th, and 13th in the 200 relay, with times of 2:01.71 (Victoria Bogdanski, Naomi Levey, Taylor Pazderski, Chloe Jeffares), 2:04.36 (Natalia Giunta, Caroline Bilich, Pazderski, Jeffares), and 2:12.36 (Kaylee Gallagher, Shannon Corr, Hannah Fisher, Ginny Frazee). Kassian and Bogdanski finished seventh and eighth in the backstroke (1:03.23, 1:04.00), while Frazee (1:09.08) finished 16th. Kolar timed 1:16.14 in the breaststroke, good for seventh place, and Levey was ninth with a time of 1:16.59. Hawks womens swimming

The women also had a back-to-back finish in the 400-yard individual medley, with Candela Sandoval placing third (5:08.27) and Giunta fourth (5:11.80). They also fared well in the 100-yard butterfly, with two top six finishers (Donlevy, fourth, 59.11, and Kirsten Giovanniello, sixth, 101.78), and also had placements of 13th (Angelina Somma, 1:04.17), 15th (Pazderski, 1:05.17), and 16th (Keiser, 1:06.63) in that event.

In the 200-yard freestyle, they took 10th and 11th place, with Julia Iaboni (2:06.59), and Kolar (2:08.24) going back-to-back. In the last event of the day for the women, the 800-yard free relay, they, like the 400 medley and 200 freestyle, had back-to-back finishes. The team of Griger, Giovanniello, Pazderski, and Bogdanski finished with a seventh place time of 8:38.32, while Sandoval, Somma, Giunta, and Fisher timed 8:52.10, for eighth place.

As for the men, they peaked, in all events, in the number four spot, with Steven Macaluso taking fourth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.45. In the 200 medley relay, they had finishes of seventh, ninth, 12th, and 14th. 1:39.67 was the seventh place finish for Macaluso, Korey Barber, Myles Dower, and Venn Engstrom. Ninth-place was the foursome of Paul Castner, Akiva Garfield, Mason Kennedy, and Leo Litovsky with a time of 1:43.85. Zac Brown, Ethan Bonney, Nicholas Brown, and Owen Rowlands' 1:49.84 was 12th, and the quartet of Euan Barclay, Samuel Debbie, Ryan LaDue, and Brian Larossa timed 1:56.53.

The most consistent placement for the men, though, came in the 400 individual medley, placing 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th, and 16th. Brandon Molina's 4:26.71 was 10th, Bonney's 4:30.09 was 11th, and Rowlands' 4:32.13 was 12th as they finished back-to-back-to-back. Coming in at number 14 was Luke Hoyt (4:34.97), and 16th was Zac Brown with a time of 4:37.67.

Along with Macaluso's fourth-place finish in the 400 butterfly, Barber (54.96), Dower (55.41), and Nicholas Brown (56.66) took 12th, 15th, and 16th respectively. In the 20th event of the day, the 200 freestyle, the Lions took the top four spots while the Hawks had no participants.

Like the 200 medley, the men had a strong presence in the 100 breaststroke as well, claiming the final five spots. Engstrom (1:02.95) was 12th, Kennedy (1:03.32) 13th, Xavier Calderon (1:03.37) 14th, and Hoyt (1:03.66) and Litovsky (1:05.87) taking 15th and 16th. Merchant Marine Academy took their first of two events in the 100 breaststroke, with Ben Endersby finishing with a time of 56.74. They also claimed the 100 backstroke, with Matthew Mizell finishing with a time of 51.70. In that event, Dower placed sixth (55.16), while Nicholas Brown (57.72), Barber (57.77), Castner (58.98), and Zac Brown (1:00.05) finished 12th, 13th, 14th, and 16th, respectively.

In the final event of the day, the 800 yard free relay, the men finished strong, with a top five placement as Bonney, Macaluso, Zac Brown, and Barclay timed 7:30.68. The team of Hoyt, Garfield, LaDue, and Nicholas Brown came in at number nine with a time of 8:11.48.

All in all on the day, TCNJ put together another dominant performance, taking first-place in every event with the exception of the aforementioned 100-yard backstroke and breaststroke. Going into day three on Sunday, SUNY New Paltz is in third place and 44 points behind the Mariners on the women's side, with 492.5 to their 536.5. The men trail by a large margin, in third with 325 points compared to Merchant Marine's 710. The Hawk men do enjoy, though, a comfortable 325-184 lead on the Sea Gulls of Salisbury.

On Sunday, the event gets started at 9 a.m., with the finals at 3 p.m.
